I am Scott Fischer, the owner of The Trained Canine.
I've been training dogs professionally since 2002. I am a Certified Mentor Trainer for the Animal Behavior College, providing hands-on instruction and supervision to students and aspiring trainers. As a proud member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers, the country's leading organization of dog trainers, I follow their strict ethical standards in my handling of the dogs I work with and in my business dealings with you. The APDT also provides many opportunities for continuing my education in the field of canine behavior and psychology. I'm also fortunate to be nearby the nationally renowned St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center in Madison, NJ, which allows me to attend workshops and seminars by some of the top trainers and behaviorists in the field.
The list of luminaries I've been lucky enough to learn from are some of the best and brightest in the field of dog behavior:
- Jean Donaldson - author of many books on dog training including Culture Clash and Dogs Are From Neptune.
- Temple Grandin - perhaps the foremost animal behaviorist in the world and author ofAnimals In Translation.
- Dr. Karen Overall - the woman who literally wrote the reference book in almost every vet's office, Clinical Behavioral Medicine For Small Animals.
- Dr. Ian Dunbar - the godfather of science-based training who pioneered a dog-friendly positive approach and the founder of the APDT
These teachers have shaped my dog-friendly, humane approach to working with dogs.
As a dog owner and lover since early childhood I knew early on that working with dogs was my desire. I apprenticed with a local kennel owner and trainer at the age of 19. Then I got sidetracked by the 'realities' of life as I went to college and then into business, eventually becoming Vice-President of KingAlarm Distributors, an electronic security products wholesale firm. During my tenure KingAlarm grew from a small two store outlet into the nation's largest independently owned security distributor with locations in 8 states. When KingAlarm was purchased by a subsidiary of Honeywell in 1999 it gave me the chance to pursue my dream.
I welcome the opportunity to help you turn your dog into your best friend for life!
